Working Group Meeting was held to develop new manuals on conciliation for legal practitioners in Turkey

A working group meeting was held on 21-22 February 2022 in Ankara within the scope of the activity on developing new manuals on conciliation for five target groups: judges, prosecutors, staff of conciliation bureaux, conciliators and lawyers under the European Union-Council of Europe Joint Project on “Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution in Turkey”.

The meeting was organised with the attendance of 20 participants, including the Directorate General for Criminal Affairs of the Ministry of Justice, local and international consultants, and stakeholders (judges, prosecutors, conciliators, lawyers and academicians) as well as the Council of Europe project team.

The two-day meeting started with the presentation of the consultants on the draft manuals they developed for judges, prosecutors, personnel of conciliation bureau, conciliators and lawyers. Following the presentations, participants hazarded their opinion on proposals on the content, structure, design of the developed manuals, and appropriateness of the proposed steps in the manuals.

The manuals aim to serve as practical tools to assist the relevant stakeholders in the Turkish conciliation mechanism to easily understand and navigate the process and to find all the necessary and basic references and information in a single publication. Within the scope of the activity, 2000 copies of the manuals will be produced and disseminated in meetings with target groups at courthouses and relevant organisations and will also be used in relevant seminars. The final version of the materials will also be made available in electronic format and promoted through different institutions’ websites.

The Joint Project on “Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Turkey” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Turkey Directorate General for Criminals Affairs and Directorate General for Legal Affairs are the end beneficiaries of the Project. The Central Finance and Contracts Unit is the contracting authority.
