Turkish Institutions Discuss Way Forward in Alimony and Compensation

The draft "Handbook on Family Court Judgements of Alimony and Compensation" prepared by the Council of Europe within the scope of the European Union-Council of Europe Joint Project on "Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members" was presented to the stakeholders in a roundtable meeting held in Ankara on 22 March 2023.

This draft Handbook draws upon the ideas exchanged during the first two roundtable meetings held in Mardin in October 2022 and aims to contribute to a unified approach to alimony and compensation decisions and its calculation in family law cases throughout Türkiye.

In addition, based on the German maintenance table system, a draft maintenance table, determining the minimum amount of child maintenance within the framework of income and age groups, was prepared.

As a result of fruitful discussion held at a recent roundtable meeting in Ankara, the draft Handbook will be further updated and finalised in May 2023.

The “Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members” Project is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe and Justice Academy of Türkiye. The Project aims to ensure rule of law and fundamental rights in Türkiye as fully in line with international and European standards and to improve the effectiveness of family courts in protecting the rights of women, children, and other family members.
