The Activity “Assessment of the Mediation System under the Regional Courts of Appeal” has Started

The first preparatory meeting of the activity “Assessment of the mediation system under the Regional Courts of Appeal (RCAs)” under the European Union-Council of Europe Joint Project on “Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Turkey” was held online on 21 December 2021 with the participation of the Directorate General for Legal Affairs (DGLA) of the Ministry of Justice representatives, the Council of Europe project team, and local and international consultants.

In the meeting, the team of consultants, who will support the activity within the framework of the mediation and arbitration component of the project, were introduced and information was provided on the scope of the activity, the work plan and division of labour. The meeting provided the opportunity for the representatives of the Ministry of Justice and consultants to come together and share their expectations regarding the works to be carried out within the scope of the relevant activity.

The Ministry of Justice envisages establishing a fair and effective complaints mechanism to deal with disputes concerning mediators and mediation administration process, and as a consequence to improve the mediation practices in general. The activity aims at establishing the Regional Mediation Assessment Boards under the Regional Court of Appeal (RCA), and developing a model for mediation assessment system. The activity will comprise of desk research, on-site assessment visits, qualitative and quantitative research/user-satisfaction surveys, and working group meetings.

 

The Joint Project on “Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Turkey” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Turkey Directorate General for Criminals Affairs and Directorate General for Legal Affairs are the end beneficiaries of the Project. The Central Finance and Contracts Unit is the contracting authority.
