The European Union-Council of Europe Joint Project on ‘Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members' has successfully concluded after a 42-month implementation period, with the closing ceremony held in Ankara on 13 September 2024.
The Head of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara, Mr.William Massolin, Head of Section of Civil Society, Fundamental Rights, Judiciary and Home Affairs of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, Mr.Jean Barbe and the President of the Justice Academy of Türkiye Mr.Muhittin Özdemir delivered the opening remarks. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the beneficiary institutions and stakeholders, along with high-level representatives from embassies and international organizations in Ankara.
The closing ceremony ended with a presentation on the outputs, progress and achievements made under the project.
The project focused on strengthening and providing support to the work of relevant judicial institutions and partners in the field of family justice. In view of that, it has achieved significant results in four specific areas:
1. Enhancing the effectiveness and functioning of family courts and the office of public prosecutors.
2. Strengthening the capacities of judges, prosecutors, judicial support workers and family court personnel on key issues related to human rights and family law.
3. Improving the cooperation mechanisms between among family justice stakeholders.
4. Raising public awareness of family court proceedings.
All speakers of the conference emphasised their confidence in the positive changes that the Family Court Project will bring about further in the domain of family justice in Türkiye.
The “Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members” Project is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe and Justice Academy of Türkiye. The Project aims to ensure that the rule of law and fundamental rights in Turkey are fully in line with international and European standards and to improve the effectiveness of family courts in protecting the rights of women, children, and other family members.
