Discussion held with Parliamentary Commission on Cooperation in Family Law

On 26 January 2023, an important meeting was held with the representatives of the Commission on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye to identify the need for effective cooperation between stakeholders involved in family law and family law procedures, in the scope of the “Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members” Project.

The President of the Justice Academy of Türkiye, Mr Muhittin Özdemir, and the Acting Head of Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara, Ms Pınar Başpınar, opened the meeting and placed emphasis on recommendations being formulated to support the improvement of  legislative and policy changes related to general family court procedures, with a focus on preventing secondary traumatisation of family members in divorce cases, improving the framework for alimony and compensation determination and preventing violence against women.

The meeting also provided a platform to share the achievements of the ongoing project and planned actions for the upcoming period.

 

The “Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members” Project is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe and Justice Academy of Türkiye. The Project aims to ensure rule of law and fundamental rights in Türkiye as fully in line with international and European standards and to improve the effectiveness of family courts in protecting the rights of women, children, and other family members.
