What if one woman's pursuit of justice could help open the door for many others?
On a Saturday morning, around 100 lawyers and representatives of civil society organisations across Türkiye from 30 different provinces came together virtually to find the answer to the question: Strategic Litigation, the deliberate selection and pursuit of cases with the aim of changing law, policy or practice beyond individual cases.
The day long training began with theoretical principles of strategic litigation and continued with examples of practical cases where lawyers could see how a single case can create new legal ways for other women facing similar challenges, leading then to a broader systemic change. This approach allows to solve a problem in the law or in how it is applied so that others do not have to face the same obstacles.
By the end of the day, the participants were not only inspired to make a systemic difference in the field, but equipped with the knowledge to strategically tackle legal proceedings and approaches that strengthen women’s access to justice through strategic litigation practices.
The event was organised during the Visibility Week of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara under the “Fostering Civil Society's Support for Women's Access to Justice in Türkiye” Programme, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
