6th Awareness Raising Meeting and Launching of e-Library

The 6th Awareness Raising Meeting of the EU-Council of Europe Joint Project “Strengthening the Capacity of Bar Associations and Lawyers on European Human Rights Standards” was organised as a hybrid event in Ankara on 23 May 2002. Representatives of the Council of Europe and the Union of Turkish Bar Associations as well as the representatives of civil society and human rights centres of local bar associations attended the event together with nearly 215 participants. Opening speeches were delivered by Attorney Erinç Sağkan, President of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and Cristian Urse, Head of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara. The aim of the meeting was to inform and discuss issues concerning the topic of “Ombuds Institution as a tool to protect human rights”. Sub-topics included Ombuds Institution as a tool for lawyers in the light of the European and international perspective, working principles of the Turkish Ombudsman Institute and practical suggestions to practitioners. Current issues and challenges covered during the meeting led to substantial and fruitful discussions.

Following the speeches, a symbolic opening ceremony was organised for IHMnet (IT Tool) and e-library developed under the project.

The Joint Project on “Strengthening the Capacity of Bar Associations and Lawyers on European Human Rights Standards (SCoBAL)” is implemented by the Council of Europe, and co-funded by the European Union, the Republic of Turkey and the Council of Europe.
