The reserve occupies an area of the Rhone delta between the Greater and the Lesser Rhone, with the sea to the south; its principal feature is the Vaccarès Lagoon. Annual rainfall is about 560mm; the rain falls chiefly in the autumn and winter causing temporary flooding; however, intensive evaporation in the summer, due mainly to wind, takes off about 1400mm water and dries the land again. The deficit is covered by water pumped from the Rhône. The salt groundwater is responsible for the development of characteristic halophitic vegetation.

The Ecrins national park is bounded by the watersheds of the Romanche to the north, the Guisane and Durance to the east and south, and the Drac to the west. High mountain national park with elevations ranging from 667 to 4102 m (Barre Ecrins), it offers to mountaineers and trekkers, more than 150 peaks over 3000m high and a total area of glaciers about 113 square km. Each of the seven deep valleys that make up this national park is unique, by the composition of its soils and rocks and of its topographic and climatic characteristics. Thus, the Ecrin’s national park is composed of a mosaic of landscapes and ecosystems, and hosts about 1800 plant species including 168 of high heritage value, and more than 350 vertebrate species, including 206 species of community interest. Thanks to the bioclimatic diversity, Ocellated lizard usually subservient to mediterranean climates, rubs the snow vole and the ptarmigan, which are survivors of the last Ice age.

Créé à partir d'une ancienne réserve nationale de chasse, issue elle-même d'une réserve de chasse du roi d'Italie passée sous souveraineté française en 1947, le Parc national du Mercantour se présente comme une étroite bande de territoire traversé par un ensemble de fleuves et rivières principalement orientés du Nord vers le Sud: Roya, Bevera, Vésubie, Tinée, Cians, Var, Lance, Verdon, Bachelard et Ubayette. Parc de haute montagne situé à moins de 30 km de la Méditerranée, il est le point de rencontre des trois zones biogéographiques, alpine, ligure et provençale, caractérisées chacune par des milieux naturels et des espèces originales.

Port-Cros makes part of the archipel of the Iles d'Hyères, situated at the coast of Var, in the Mediterrannean. On a distance of 15 km from the mainland, Port-Cros is the smallest and most mountaineous. Outside the main island, the terrestrial zone of the parc (675 ha) contains the island of Bagaud and two little island, Rascas and Gabinière. The marine zone extends over a distance of 600m from these islands (1800 ha).

La Réserve Naturelle de Scandola est une Réserve mixte, terrestre et marine, située dans le bassin nord occidental de la Méditerranée à l'extrimité ouest de la Corse. La presqu’île de Scandola est caractérisée par des falaises rocheuses qui outre leur intérêt géologique (caldeira, orgues rhyolithiques en position horizontal) abritent de nombreux oiseaux marins et est un site important pour la reproduction du balbuzard pêcheur, et du cormoran huppé méditerranéen.

De nombreuses espèces végétales endémiques : 38 espèces dont 17 ont le statut d’espèce protégée sont présentes sur territoire de la Réserve. La partie terrestre de la Réserve abrite 16 habitats élémentaires. En mer, depuis les biocénoses de l’étage médiolittoral au circalittoral, elle recèle une grande diversité faunistique et floristique dont il faut souligner la grande richesse (6 des 9 espèces de plantes, d’invertébrés et de poissons marins protégés par la législation française).

La Vanoise est située dans le département de la Savoie entre les chaînes montagneuses de la Tarentaise et de la Maurienne. C’est un paysage alpin comprenant 107 sommets de 3000 m ou plus, et partageant une frontière de 14 km de long avec le Parc National de Gran Paradiso en Italie. Ces deux parcs réunis représentent la plus vaste réserve naturelle d’Europe centrale (125.000 ha).
