Council of Europe Anti-Racism Commission visits Bosnia and Herzegovina

Strasbourg, 18.03.2010 - A delegation of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) visited Bosnia and Herzegovina from 8 to 12 March 2010. During its visit, ECRI´s delegation gathered information on the implementation of the recommendations it made to the authorities in its 2005 report and discussed new issues that have emerged since.

The delegation held meetings in Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, Stolac and Prnjavor with representatives of all relevant ministries and human rights NGOs.

Following this visit, ECRI will adopt a report in which it will make a fresh set of recommendations on measures to be taken by the authorities to address racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance in the country. Among these, three will be revisited in two years’ time as part of an interim follow-up procedure.

In its 2005 report ECRI had found that severe problems of racism and racial (including ethnic and religious) discrimination persisted, often as a result of nationalist policies pursued by ethnically based political parties. In ECRI´s view, such problems aggravated the situation of certain groups within a society generally affected by the very difficult post-war socio-economic conditions. ECRI also said that problems of direct and indirect discrimination were pervasive in several areas of life, especially in education, employment, housing and access to health services.

ECRI is an independent human rights body of the Council of Europe which monitors problems of racism and intolerance, prepares reports and issues recommendations to member States. For more information on ECRI: www.coe.int/ecri
