50th Plenary Session ECRI held its 50th plenary session from 15 to 18 December 2009 in Strasbourg. On this occasion, it organised an exchange of views with the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, who expressed support for its work and stressed the importance of its contribution to the fight against racism and all related forms of discrimination and intolerance in Europe. All three former Chairs, Frank Orton, Nikos Frangakis and Michael Head, attended a special brainstorming meeting during which they made concrete suggestions for the future based on their experience at the helm of this unique monitoring body. On 17 December 2009 ECRI elected a new Chair, Nils Muiznieks, who will assume office on 1 January 2010. The 50th plenary session coincided with the publication of a book entitled "The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, its first 15 years", written by Lanna Hollo, a specialist in equality legislation and minorities issues.
