Professional activities

(a) Present positions:

-  Member of the evaluation commission for the Federal Integration Courses

- Coordinator for language training for migrants at the Berlin State Administration of Education

- Chair of the Berlin welfare organisation “Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband”

- Co-editor of the monthly journal for immigration law and integration policies “ZAR”

- Columnist on social, migration and educational issues since 2009 for a newspaper edited in Berlin

 (b) Work at national/state level:

-  Commissioner for Integration and Migration of the Berlin Senate (1981 –2003)

- Ms John was appointed by the former mayor of Berlin Richard von Weizsäcker; she was the first commissioner at the state level serving in this office. In this capacity she sat on various national commissions concerning migration and integration.

-  Initiator of the Muslim Academy in Germany in 2004 ( an institution for adult education of Muslims and on Muslim issues)

- Chairperson of the Board of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency Berlin

 (c) International work:

- German member of the Starting Point and of the Starting Line Group under the management of the Commission of the Churches in Europe (CCME) in Brussels from1993 until 1999. This group laid the foundations for the anti-discrimination directives of the European Union.

- Deputy member on the board of the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) 1999-2005.

- Member of the Migration Policy Group until 2003.

- Project leader of the action programme “Development of co-operation between the state authorities, local governments, law enforcement authorities, scientific and educational institution and civil institutes in the Sverdlovsk region in order to increase the level of tolerance toward religious, national and linguistic minorities” (2005-2006, 18 months, contract 2004/096-854).

- Member of the German Jury for the European Journalist Award “For Diversity-Against Discrimination” since 2003.

- Member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), Council of Europe, since 2008.

Publications and other works:

Numerous articles on integration, migration, discrimination, citizenship, language learning and related subjects.
