 Lord
(Jonathan) Mance was elected as first chairman of
the Consultative Council of European Judges in
December 2000, and re-elected in December 2002
serving until the end of 2003. He was then a member
of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales, being
subsequently appointed in October 2005 to the
highest United Kingdom court, the Appellate
Committee of the House of Lords (which is due to
transform itself in October 2009 into the new United
Kingdom Supreme Court).
Lord Mance read jurisprudence
at Oxford, worked for a period in Germany and then
practised as a barrister in England and various
overseas countries from 1967 to 1993, becoming
Queen’s Counsel in 1982.
He specialised in commercial
and international matters, was a founder director of
the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund Limited and chaired
various Banking Appeal Tribunals before his
appointment in 1993 to the High Court bench, where
he sat both in commercial cases and in other matters
including crime.
He was appointed to the Court
of Appeal in 1999 to hear both civil and criminal
appeals.
He was president of the
British Insurance Law Association in 2000-2002, and
has been a trustee of the European Law Academy since
2003. He is chairman of Hampstead Counselling
Service and the author and editor or various legal
works, articles and lectures.
He has since 2003 continued to
represent the United Kingdom on the CCJE. |
