WORLD AWARE EDUCATION AWARDS

This Award seeks to recognise and encourage projects which promote the practice of global education in formal and non-formal educational settings, displaying excellence in networking, partnership and coordination for increased and improved global education; bringing together different actors and institutions.

 

WORLD AWARE EDUCATION AWARDS 2011

The call for applications for the World Aware Education Awards 2011 edition was launched on 20 October through the North-South Centre (NSC) website and newsletters, with the deadline established for 18 November.

This call resulted in 26 applications from Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Estonia, Ireland, Ireland, Italy, Nigeria, Portugal, Republic of South Africa, Rwanda, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, United Kingdom, and international organisations such as IFMSA, EUROCLIO and NMUN.

Applicants were informed that projects would be submitted to an international jury for assessment and that the three laureate projects would be presented during the Global Education Week network seminar taking place in Warsaw on 12-13 December, in the framework of the European Development Days.

The international members of the jury were invited among NSC partner organisations and members of the Global Education Week network.  Projects were selected accordingly to NSC selection criteria and scoring grid sent to the international jury, composed by the Council of Europe confederation of International NGOs; European Youth Forum and OBESSU - Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions.

Upon deliberation based on the suggestions of the jury the three laureate projects are:

       Gender & Media (Eesti People to People)

As an example of innovation in networking and partnership among EU and neighbouring countries and coordination for increased and improved global education across the Europe and Asia, the “Gender and Media” training project assured active participation of young people in global education.
Participants learned about present situation with gender equality and gender stereotypes in media in own countries, in Europe and EU neighboring countries, they made own analyses of media and media texts from gender perspective and global education, learned to write gender sensitive news articles, press-realizes and used modern media resources to create news for traditional and social media, blogs and networks.
The objective was to create a group of gender sensitive young people and media customers with new knowledge about gender and media.

       Sustainable development in cultural diversity: a Europe-Asia bridge for youth empowerment (ESTYES)

The project brought together 27 youth workers and 85 young volunteers from 15 youth organizations from Europe and Asia with the aim of exploring issues related to sustainable development and cultural diversity.
It explored the different ways sustainable development is conceived, lived and approached in different cultural realities.
Its final goal was to increase awareness on sustainable development and empower participants with skills, knowledge and experience in order to further work on related issues at local and international level, also thanks to a number of instruments (handbook, dialogue platform) conceptualized and produced in the course of the project.
Young people, Local communities, local organizations, and indireclty countries, and their societies, were the main targets of this project.

       Historiana – Your Portal to the Past (EUROCLIO)

Historiana is an international education program, initiated to develop an educational website on the history and heritage of Europe that involves more than 30 countries. It offers teachers and young people the opportunity to compare locations and periods, various experiences of people, and the consequences of historical developments, articulated in material and immaterial legacies of Europe. The website aim at offering alternative solution to the idea of a European History Textbook.
The first version of the website can be accessed at http://historiana.webtic.nl and is being prepared for piloting with students, which will start early 2012 after the final improvements have been implemented and more content has been added.

The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe would like to congratulate all applicants for the quality of their projects and praise their work and endeavour for intercultural understanding.

WORLD AWARE EDUCATION AWARDS 2010

The call for the World Aware Education Awards, which deadline was 13 October, resulted in over 30 applications from Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Cameroon, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Timor, Uganda, United-Kingdom, USA, and international organisations such as BICE, EUROCLIO, and UNOY.
Applications have been submitted to an international jury for assessment.

After deliberation upon suggestions of the jury – Council of Europe confederation of International NGOs; European Youth Forum and Polish Platform of NGDO, Grupa Zagranica – the three proposed laureate projects are :

    Africa-Europe National Youth Councils Training Cooperation

    Awareness for Fairness : joint action of public administration & NGO for the advancement of Global Education in Europe

    Education for Rural Livelihoods and Food Sovereignty (ERLAFS) – ERLAFS report

The award ceremony took place in Brussels, the 7th of December 2010, in the framework of the European Development Days.

 

WORLD AWARE EDUCATION AWARDS 2009

Following the World Aware Education Award announcement launched in July 2009 through the Global Education newsletter and the NSC website (with deadline 10 September), NSC received applications from Austria, Brazil, Burkina-Faso, Colombia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Mozambique, Netherland, Poland, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Togo and UK.

Based on the international jury assessment, we are happy to share with you the result of the North-South Centre final selection for the three WAEA laureates.

The three laureate projects nominated for WAEA are:

    Forgotten diaries – Italy

 

WORLD AWARE EDUCATION AWARDS 2007/8

World Aware Education Award announcement launched in July 2008 through the Global Education newsletter and the NSC website resulted in numerous applications from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, Palestine, Romania, Slovakia and UK.
Based on the international jury assessment the three projects nominated for WAEA laureates were :
