GLOBAL EDUCATION WEEK 2007
EVALUATION & PLANNING FEEDBACK FORM
1. Please indicate the major achievement of the GEW 2007 in your country
Inclusion of a number of Global Education projects under the logo of GEW
2. Please indicate obstacles for a sound implementation of GEW
Little institutional support, especially no support from the Ministry of Education (what will hopefully change soon) which makes it much more difficult to reach teachers.
3. How is the GEW coordinated nationally?
Is there any official coordinating structure?
No official structure. There’s only an appointed GEW network National Contact .
Or a Global Education national platform?
There’s a Development Education Working Group in frame of the Zagranica Group – a coalition of Polish NGOs working internationally. The Working Group is dealing with variety of subjects, including GEW; however, in 2007 GEW wasn’t widely discussed. This is the body, consulted by the GEW network National Contact when agreeing on dates of the GEW in Poland (they sometimes vary a bit from the internationally announced date).
Which are your main partners at national level? And international level?
Ministry of Foreign Affairs plays some role – at least they publish information on their special website dedicated to development cooperation and development education. Also in frame of the small grants for development education, which they provided in 2007 (as example - Education for Democracy – was an operator of this grants) inclusion of GEW into plan of activities is well seen. There are some NGOs (around 30-40) and schools, which are getting involved in promotion of GEW, among others by posting and distributing posters, which we managed to print.
4. Has any website on Global Education Week activities or resources been developed in your country? If site exists please share its web-address.
www.tydzienedukacjiglobalnej.pl It exists already for 3 years, it’s done voluntarily and updates to the extend of our possibilities.
5. Please report on networking and/or coordination strategies developed during the GEW (institutional level / local authorities / educational & youth structures / civil society / media)
Strategy seems to be a too big word. We just tried to use the above mentioned website, our contact with our grantees of Development Education grants and with Zagranica Group members to mobilize people.
6. After the week, any comments on the theme choice for GEW 2007 (relevance, adaptability, changes made to theme at national level, usefulness for activities with different age ranges, sectors, etc. )
It needs to be stressed, that in Poland we don’t run the GEW under the theme chosen at the international level. The topic of global education itself is still quite new and we were avoiding any limitations, which would be brought by the theme. We also tried to encourage the grantees of Development Education grants to include GEW into their activities and this funding line also had some thematic priorities – it would be too complicated to try to mach all the topics.
7. Please report, if possible, relevant quantitative results concerning the GEW in your country (i.e. number of schools - classes, pupils, teachers involved; youth organisations or groups, young people or youth workers/leaders; conferences; training events; news features; materials produced, related figures and dissemination, etc.)
It’s quite an informal structure, so we don’t get that much of reports of what happened around the country, especially concerning the numbers.
8. Please report relevant qualitative information concerning the impact of the GEW in your country (i.e. type of strategies, methods, projects; reactions and suggestions by teachers, pupils, youth organisations; local communities; educational authorities, Ministry of Education; opportunities for co-operation among NGOs, teachers etc.)
The events organized in some cities or regions of Poland received quite a good visibility: happenings and art contests for youth, increasing the awareness of pupils, teachers and local communities. This forms turned out to be the most successful, bringing a lot of attention to the topic, although the climate conditions are not favourable for any outdoor events in November.
9. For Global Education Week 2007,
· Is there a theme-choosing process at national level; if so, can you describe it for the benefit of other countries that do not have such a process?
· Are there any themes already emerging for the week at national level – if so, which themes?
No process yet for 2008, no emerging themes yet
10. Are there any existing or planned educational materials that you would like to share with the network?
There were 2 very good projects of Development Education on Africa done for kindergarten pupils, if the organizations running them would be willing to prepare presentations/ descriptions in English, I think that these are excellent ideas to share with others.
11. Give concrete examples on how the North-South Centre has been useful in facilitating the Global Education Week in your country;
I’m sorry, I just can’t provide anything for 2007. What we received was basically the mailing once a month, but we also didn’t ask for any kind of special support directed to Poland.
12. Please indicate how North-South Centre could improve its actions in supporting your work in GEW in your country and at the European level.
We’ll try to re-establish communication and dialogue with the Ministry of Education concerning development and global education (including GEW), this dialogue was impossible under the previous government. Some support in fostering this dialogue could be a great support for us – like a letter from the North-South Centre urging and encouraging the Ministry to take active position and support NGOs and schools, which want to be active in this field.
13. Please do suggest ideas for improving the GEW preparatory process; the GEW webpage and the Global Education Newsletter
For us the e-mail announcement about the dates of GEW 2007 were quite late. In fact, people want to know the exact dates already in May – June, when they are planning some actions and submitting applications for funding to some donors (last year people were a bit confused which week is the 3rd week of November, taking into account that the month had started in the middle of the week, so finally the Development Education Working Group decided on the dates).
It might be good to have more interactive process – have a forum or a regular mailing list of National Contacts or a space on the community portal, which could be used by all of us to work on some ideas – we could offer such space at www.civicportal.org
Thank you for your co-operation!
