GLOBAL EDUCATION WEEK 2007

EVALUATION & PLANNING FEEDBACK FORM

1. Please indicate the major achievement of the GEW 2007 in your country

Α. The number of participating teachers was slightly increased
B. This year all our functions related to GEW were organized in cooperation with the NGO “Fair Trade – Hellas”. Thus, they were not only various but also more appealing to teachers and the general public (see for these functions below, point 7)

2. Please indicate obstacles for a sound implementation of GEW

No major obstacles

3. How is the GEW coordinated nationally?

Is there any official coordinating structure?

No (in the sense of a state structure)

Or a Global Education national platform?

Not a platform, but the teachers network NEP (New Educational Perspectives) – which has 18 branches nationwide – cooperates with GAIA.

Which are your main partners at national level? And international level?

    At national level:
This year: The NGO “Fair Trade Hellas”.

Since many years: The above mentioned NEP, the Local Education Authorities,
the City Council of Thessaloniki, the Union of Parents Associations of
Thessaloniki and the Association of Philologi.

At international level: No permanent partners. Occasional cooperation with
various partners, mostly European. This year the NGO Pangea (Italy) and the
NGO UUSI TUULI RY (Finland) – both are partners in Development Education
projects co-financed by the EC. They assisted GAIA in developing educational
materials, particularly games and a theatrical play which, when completed, will
be used in the GEW and other GAIA’s activities.

4. Has any website on Global Education Week activities or resources been developed in your country? If site exists please share its web-address.

No special website for GEW. It is promoted through GAIA’s website:

www.gaiaec-nep.com

5. Please report on networking and/or coordination strategies developed during the GEW (institutional level / local authorities / educational & youth structures / civil society / media)

All factors mentioned in point 3 cooperated in the GEW 2007.

6. After the week, any comments on the theme choice for GEW 2007 (relevance, adaptability, changes made to theme at national level, usefulness for activities with different age ranges, sectors, etc. )

The theme was generally accepted, but there was flexibility in the way it was used.

7. Please report, if possible, relevant quantitative results concerning the GEW in your country (i.e. number of schools - classes, pupils, teachers involved; youth organisations or groups, young people or youth workers/leaders; conferences; training events; news features; materials produced, related figures and dissemination, etc.)

    - Nº of schools: Approx. 100
    - Nº of teachers: Approx. 180
    - Nº of classes: Approx. 220
    - Nº of pupils: Approx. 7500

Events (organized this year in cooperation with “Fair Trade Hellas”):
    - 16 Oct. 2007: initial planning and teachers training seminar and workshops in Thessaloniki.
    - 11 Nov. 2007 (morning): An ecological theatrical play (“The Assembly of the Seeds”) for primary school kids.
    - 11 Nov. 2007 (afternoon): A seminar for 26 representatives of youth organizations.
    - 12 Nov. 2007: 2nd seminar and workshops for teachers in Thessaloniki
    - 13 Nov. 2007 (morning): A pilot lesson on Global Education in the 1st Lyceum of Pylea, Thessaloniki.
    - 14 Nov. 2007 (morning): a similar lesson in the 16th Lyceum of Thessaloniki.
    - 23 Nov. 2007: Function open to the public for the GEW and the promotion of the Fair Trade idea.

8. Please report relevant qualitative information concerning the impact of the GEW in your country (i.e. type of strategies, methods, projects; reactions and suggestions by teachers, pupils, youth organisations; local communities; educational authorities, Ministry of Education; opportunities for co-operation among NGOs, teachers etc.)

GAIA is completing its plans for a strategy related to the type of “All Day Schools” (schools extending their operation in the afternoon hours) in Greece – mostly through developing new pleasant materials, like theatrical plays and games (see above, point 3).
Also, for an in-service training of the teachers of NEP, GAIA initiated a new project-proposal (to be co-financed by the E.C.) titled “Enhancing Development Education in Central-Eastern European Countries”. Other partners in this project will be the Austrian NGO Sudwind (Austria, the lead-partner) and other NDOs from the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria. The central issue of the project is proposed to be “Global Citizenship”. In case that the procedure for an approval of the project will be successful, this could be a very promising basis for promoting even more Global Education in Greece, for improving the relationship of GAIA with the Greek State Education Authorities and, consequently, for GEW in Greece as well.

9. For Global Education Week 2007,

· Is there a theme-choosing process at national level; if so, can you describe it for the benefit of other countries that do not have such a process?

No, there is not such a process in Greece.

· Are there any themes already emerging for the week at national level – if so, which themes?

No, there are not.

10. Are there any existing or planned educational materials that you would like to share with the network?

The materials mentioned above in point 3, when they are completed

11. Give concrete examples on how the North-South Center has been useful in facilitating the Global Education Week in your country;

Valuable information and guidance through frequent (mostly e-mail) correspondence. Also, through the certificates for participation in the GEW, which are issued by the NSC and attract teachers to be involved.

12. Please indicate how North-South Centre could improve its actions in supporting your work in GEW in your country and at the European level.

Very useful would be if we could attract the interest of important persons of the Greek Pedagogical Institute or other relevant authority of the Greek Ministry of Education. If anyone is invited in the Strasburg event, the presentation of the GE Guideline could be very attractive

13. Please do suggest ideas for improving the GEW preparatory process; the GEW webpage and the Global Education Newsletter

They are all much more than very satisfactory!

Thank you for your co-operation!
