Programme
As in previous years, the starting point for the theme of the European Heritage Days was found in the general European Year – 2012 is celebrated in the European Union as the Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. With age, people gain experience and wisdom. We wish for the young people to listen to this wisdom and experience and on them build the knowledge and talents useful for the world of today.
When this theme is projected onto heritage, it can be said that as heritage grows old, it grows more valuable – if, of course, we are able to cherish it for the values it holds for today. The heritage offers countless stories which may help the young generation to find at least a challenge for their assertion if not the meaning of life. The heritage lends a framework for the reflection on what bring the modern ways of life and whether it is true that only novelties count whereas all that is old is redundant, conservative and hinders progress.
We often say that the heritage was not given to us as a gift by our parents and grandparents but was lent by our children and grandchildren. This is why we need to take good care of it and treasure it.
All of this is especially true for Idrija. The highest recognition heritage can acquire is its inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage List and from this year on Idrija has every right to be proud of this accomplishment. An inscription to the world heritage list obliges us to the highest power to take care for the heritage of the human kind, to contribute to it and to pass it on to next generations.
