Description

Our decision for "Made of Wood" as the topic for the 2011 Austrian "Tag des Denkmals", European Heritage Days in Austria, was made to correspond with the United Nations "International Year of the Forests". The national organisation and coordination is, as in previous years, undertaken by the Bundesdenkmalamt, the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments. Many active partners, as well as state institutions and private owners, contribute with enthusiasm and enable us to look forward to a successful event where the public meets "its" cultural heritage. Monuments are explained by experts who describe their unknown and unexpected aspects. There is a huge range of cultural heritage objects made out of timber, such as neolithic pile dwellings, wood craft objects, technical masterpieces of historic roof structures, wood as alpine building materials, artistic furniture, historic devices for wood transport, the art of marquetry, instruments. Last but not least we will emphasise the field of scientific dating of cultural heritage through the method of dendrochronology.

The Toboggan was first opened in 1913 in Prater (Vienna). It is one of the oldest timber helter skelter slides in Europe. It suffered severe damage in the Second World War but was renovated in 1947. For safety reasons it had to be closed in 2000. In 2006 it was put under protection, renovated in 2008 and reopened to the public in 2009.

Description

The theme for this year refers to the Places for Pleasure. The national organisation and coordination is, as in previous years, sited in the Bundesdenkmalamt, the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments. Many active partners, as well state institutions and private owners, contribute with enthusiasm and enable us to look forward to a successful event where the public meets "its" cultural heritage. Monuments are explained by experts who describe their unknown and unexpected aspects. People will meet their heritage in an enjoyable way in accordance with the topic. Thus we will see historical inns, baths, gardens, cinema halls, archaeological sites, etc. The heritage day for schools will take place on 24th September.
