2011 "Cultural Event" label

The Council of Europe "Cultural Event" label recognises exceptional and innovative cultural and artistic projects which address key challenges of today’s European societies and convey strong messages related to the Council of Europe’s mission and values.

The following projects have been awarded the Council of Europe "Cultural Event" label in 2011:

1. 7th Festival Strasbourg-Mediterranean

The 7th Festival Strasbourg-Mediterranean will take place in Strasbourg from 26 November – 10 December 2011. More than 90 events will be organised in 44 venues which deal with the theme of the "Exil": immigration, exil of women, migration and Human Rights, etc. A special workshop will be organised on the work done by the Council of Europe on this topic.

2. One World Romania Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

The 5th edition of the documentary film festival will take place from 14 – 19 March 2012 in Bucharest with collateral events organised in seven other cities in Romania. Films will be screened and debates organised for the public and children on issues like nationalism, Roma, sexual minorities, corruption and (social) justice etc.

3. Climate Walk

An innovative and interactive environmental project will take place in Berlin as from 4 December 2011 at the Akademie der Künste. The public is invited to ask questions and will get answers in an interactive way on the issue of climate change. It is organised by the ZKM I Center of Art and Media in Karlsruhe and will mark the official opening to the "Climate Anomie, Climate Turn, change it. 2012" exhibition on show in Karlsruhe.

4. Call the Witness - 2nd Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennial 2011

A series of live testimonies: works of art, performances, artist’s debates, modern thinkers and politicians – on the injustices against the Roma in Europe will be presented live at the opening of the Biennale and online: http://www.callthewitness.net. The pavillion was co-financed by the European Commission and the Council of Europe and other partner institutions. The Council of Europe’s Deputy Secretary General will present an original form of testimony, a patchwork quilt, realised by a group of Roma women living near Strasbourg . The project was managed by the Council of Europe and Advocacy Net, a Washington based NGO which aids marginalized communities to tell their story, assert their rights and produce social change.
