The European Audiovisual Observatory has just published a new report on the presence of women working in European film.
This new study reveals that women represented only 27% of all professionals involved in European feature film production between 2015 and 2024. Gender imbalances remain marked across professions: women accounted for 34% of producers, 31% of screenwriters, 30% of editors and 27% of directors, but only 14% of cinematographers and 13% of composers.
The report notes that the share of female professionals has grown since 2015. The following picture emerges when looking at individual professional roles. Comparing the average shares for the periods 2015–2019 and 2020–2024 shows that the share of female directors increased by 3%. Roles with a very low female representation, such as composers and cinematographers, saw a slight improvement (+4% and +2% respectively). Meanwhile, roles with an above-average share of women, such as producers and screenwriters, increased by 4%. However, the share of female editors remained almost unchanged (an increase of just 1%) between these two periods.
At the current rate of growth, gender parity would not be reached before 2047 for directors, 2061 for composers, 2074 for editors and 2077 for producers.
Among genres, documentaries stood out with the strongest female presence.
