Trainings for advocates and court staff in the regions of Azerbaijan

On 24 and 31 July 2018, the Council of Europe held two training seminars on “Article 8 (Right to respect for private and family life) of the European Convention on Human Rights” in Shirvan and Mingachevir cities. The events were organized in cooperation with the Academy of Justice and the Collegium of Advocates of Azerbaijan.

22 advocates from Mingachevir, Yevlakh, Agdash, Ismayilli, Barda, Goychay, Tartar and Goranboy regions, as well as 20 judge assistants and court clerks representing courts under the jurisdiction of Shirvan Appeal Court attended the training sessions. As a result of the trainings, participants got familiarized with four dimensions (private and family life, home and correspondence) under Article 8 of the Convention and the European Court’s approach to their applicability, as well as based on case-studies learned how to apply the two-stage test used in its application.

The activities were organised in the framework of the Project “Support to Justice Sector Reform Initiatives in Azerbaijan” funded by the United States of America Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

As of today, more than 300 legal professionals (judges, advocates, prosecutors, investigators, judge assistants and court clerks, lawyers and human rights defenders) have been trained on various European Convention on Human Rights standards as a result of a series of training sessions organised within the Project.
