Key actors from the South of the Republic of Moldova on law enforcement in anti-discrimination field, including judges, prosecutors, police officers and representatives of national relevant authorities (29 participants) gathered for a practical workshop on investigating cases of discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes.
The discussions led to a better understanding of how different institutions handle discrimination cases — from investigation and documentation to decision-making. Participants also explored ways to enhance cooperation between the judiciary, the General Police Inspectorate, the Equality Council and the People’s Advocate Office to further strengthen the mechanism of victims’ protection by finding collaborative solutions among professionals working in the field of equality.
As part of the training materials, the legal professionals were provided with the recent Recommendation of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers on combating hate speech, the Recommendation to member states on combating hate crime, and other relevant European standards in the field.
A similar workshop was previously held for judiciary and law enforcement professionals from the North of Moldova, ensuring consistent practices in identifying, investigating, and addressing cases of discrimination and hate-related offences.
These coordinated efforts contribute to building a more inclusive and resilient justice system, aligned with European standards and responsive to the needs of vulnerable communities.
This event was organised in co-operation with the General Police Inspectorate and National Institute of Justice, as a common initiative of the following projects: European Union/Council of Europe project “Combating discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes in the Republic of Moldova”, part of the European Union and Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, and Council of Europe project “Enhancing diversity and equality in the Republic of Moldova – phase II.”
