The Council of Europe invites stakeholders, practitioners and the wider public to join an online webinar “Discrimination in Al and automated decision-making systems: Frameworks, gaps and policy actions for equality bodies and human rights structures” to be held on 15 January 2026 at 10:30−12:00 CET. The event, held in English with International Sign (IS) interpretation, will examine the challenges posed by algorithmic discrimination and highlight ways to strengthen governance and accountability frameworks in Europe.
Key questions to be explored:
- What are the main challenges in addressing discrimination driven by AI and ADM systems?
- How can existing governance frameworks be improved to better tackle algorithmic bias?
- What roles should public authorities, equality bodies and national human rights institutions play in ensuring algorithmic accountability?
Leading specialists in AI, equality and non-discrimination will share their insights, including:
- Raphaële Xenidis, Assistant Professor in European Law, Sciences Po
- Soizic Pénicaud, International Consultant, Council of Europe
Participants will also be introduced to two new resources:
- Report on legal protection against algorithmic discrimination in Europe: Current frameworks and remaining gaps
- European policy guidelines on AI and algorithm-driven discrimination for equality bodies and national human rights structures
This webinar is organised as part of the European Union – Council of Europe Technical Support Project “Upholding equality and non-discrimination by equality bodies regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in public administrations” and in cooperation with the Interfederal Center for Equal Opportunities (Unia, Belgium), the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman (Finland), and the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (Portugal).
