Inclusion et anti-discrimination

A two-day tailor-made training seminar was organised in Moldova, aimed at equipping twenty media professionals, journalists and public communicators with the necessary knowledge and skills to report on ethnic minorities and LGBTI issues, using a human rights-based approach, thus promoting ethical journalism, fostering inclusivity, and countering discrimination in media narratives.

The training addressed a number of topics, including journalistic ethics, inclusive language and key SOGIESC terminology. It further focused on reporting on LGBTI issues, Roma issues and antisemitism through case studies that sought to shed light on common mistakes in reporting on these groups, and to explore alternative solutions and best European practices.

In addition, the session facilitated peer-to-peer dialogue on the ethical and professional responsibilities of journalists and media practitioners, sharing practical experiences, identifying key resources and contacts for future collaborations.

The discussion was facilitated by an international consultant from the Council of Europe, whose journalistic background guided the discussion on professional and ethical standards in the field, as well as by national experts who provided valuable insights into the Moldovan context.

Participants were welcomed by Evgenia Giakoumopoulou, Head of the SOGIESC Unit, of the Council of Europe who presented the Council of Europe standards on non-discrimination, hate speech and hate crime, and by Petru Macovei, Director of Association of Independent Press, who provided insights on the provisions and application of the Code of Ethics for Journalists adopted in the Republic of Moldova.

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding that accurate and inclusive media reporting serves not only as a safeguard against the spread of harmful stereotypes but also as a tool for promoting diversity and social cohesion. Participants emphasized that this becomes especially critical during political campaigns and national elections, where rhetoric can influence public attitudes and policy decisions.

The event was organised in collaboration with the Association of Independent Press as part of the Council of Europe project “Enhancing Diversity and Equality in the Republic of Moldova - phase II”, implemented by the Anti-discrimination Co-operation Unit and SOGIESC Unit within the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2025-2028.
