On the 6th of April, a high level Forum on Political Participation of LGBTI people in Albania was hosted by the Albanian Assembly with the support of the European Union/Council of Europe joint action “Preventing and Combating Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation and gender Identity in Albania”.
Build around the study “Political Participation of LGBTI people in Albania “, the event aimed at addressing the key challenges faced by the LGBTI community with senior representatives from the Assembly, Government institutions, diplomatic missions, LGBTI organizations, activists and other civil society organizations who discussed the importance of respecting the LGBTI rights and accountability institutions in the implementation of inclusive and non-discriminatory policies.
The messages of the deputy Speaker of the Assembly, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, the Minister of Education, Youth and Sport focused on the need for inclusiveness and greater protection of LGBTI rights as the international community representatives called for ending the hate speech towards the LGBTI.
The participants appraised the progress made in the last 10 years with regards to LGBTI rights, yet a dynamic and empowered LGBTI movement has to gain further solid ground in Albanian political, social and economic life.
