Alternatives to immigration detention: fostering effective results

PRACTICAL GUIDE, adopted by the CDDH at its 91st meeting (18-21 June 2019).

This handbook serves as a tool for practitioners by providing a concise and visual guide on the effective implementation of alternatives to immigration detention. Its central focus is on the practical aspects of applying alternatives, thereby complementing the Analysis by the Steering Committee for Human Rights (CDDH) "Legal and Practical Aspects of Effective Alternatives to Detention in the Context of Migration", published in 2017.

As there is no “one size fits all” approach in the field, the handbook seeks to highlight some of the crucial principles, elements and questions that help in the practical implementation of alternatives in diverse settings. It does so, inter alia, by addressing key questions of “Why-What-How”: Why should we apply alternatives? What types of alternatives could be considered? How might we make them work?
