The 49-nation Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) has commended steps taken by the United Kingdom in recent years to help prevent corruption among members of parliament, judges and prosecutors.
A compliance report published today states that the UK has satisfactorily implemented or dealt with seven out of eight recommendations included in a full GRECO evaluation published in March 2013.
GRECO notes that the UK has achieved tangible results in preventing corruption among members of parliament. These include revising relevant codes of conduct as well as providing clearer guidance on MPs’ dealings with lobbyists and the acceptance of gifts.
A range of important measures have also been introduced concerning the ethical training of judges and prosecutors. One final recommendation relating to the use of fee-paid judges – as opposed to salaried judges –remains partly implemented.
