The Romanian trade union organisation Blocul National Sindical (BNS) held its 10th Congress and 25th anniversary on 1-2 November 2016 in Bucharest.
The Council of Europe was represented at these events by Régis Brillat, Head of the Department of the European Social Charter, Executive Secretary of the European Committee of Social Rights. Mr Brillat made a speech at the Congress’ opening and contributed to Panel 1 on “Labour legislation and the role of social partners in regulating the labour market”. In his interventions, he referred to the European Social Charter and its specific provisions relating to the right to bargain collectively and the right to carry out trade union activities. He mentioned that the Charter is currently the subject of the so-called Turin Process, the aim of which is to replace the Charter at the heart of the activities of the Council of Europe and European Union.
The efforts made by Romanian authorities in implementing the Charter and the results achieved in this context were also stressed.
Mr Brillat expressed the hope that soon Romania will join the democratic countries which have accepted the Additional Protocol to the European Social Charter Providing for a System of Collective Complaints.
