Context

The Patrimoni PEU project is an initiative of the University Extension Programme (PEU) of the Jaume I University of Castellón (Spain).

The Patrimoni PEU project is structured around a network of heritage communities that have emerged in the last 20 years in the territory. These groups are developing local projects about their cultural heritage, but also, within the framework of the project, they are interacting with each other in search of common ground for reflection, analysis and permanent dialogue.

The main goal of the project is the development of networks of local groups (local heritage communities) to exchange experiences and methodologies about cultural heritage. In this long-term process, one of the most important challenges is the role and attitude of the University in direct relationship with the people, places and stories.

Description of Activity

Through the Patrimoni PEU project, Jaume I University offers rural specialists, cultural associations and groups in the area a space for technical support consultation and guidance on matters related to cultural heritage, and the awareness, interpretation and socialization of this asset. The three pillars of the Patrimoni PEU project are:

  • Trainings (courses and workshops about heritage and needs of the groups)
  • Accompaniment program (continuous specialized support)
  • A wide range of network structures that enable training, exchange, debate and planning to be shared among the Patrimoni PEU groups.

The main elements of the Patrimoni PEU project groups are the voluntary involvement of the local group members, the importance of participation, its horizontal structure (bottom up), the continuous remodelling and updating of the training and methods used and the sharing and export of knowledge about cultural heritage's socialization.
