Italy ratifies the Faro Convention

In the presence of the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe and the Director for Democratic Participation, Ambassador Michele Giacomelli, Permanent Representative of Italy to the Council of Europe, deposited the instrument of ratification for the Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society. This latest ratification brings the total number of ratifications to 20, in addition to the 5 other signatories that have not yet ratified.

This Convention (known as the “Faro Convention”) is based on the idea that knowledge and use of heritage form part of the citizen’s right to participate in cultural life. It presents heritage as a resource for human development, the enhancement of cultural diversity and the promotion of intercultural dialogue, and as part of an economic development model based on the principles of sustainable resource use.

The Convention will enter into force for Italy on 1 April 2021.
