On 26 April 2021, a new training course on the multidisciplinary approach in prison healthcare delivery was presented to the Ukrainian prison governors. The course consists of three modules/six sessions and aims to facilitate the understanding of the Council of Europe relevant standards and the added value of the multidisciplinary approach in dealing with prison healthcare issues.
Representatives of the Ministry of Justice, State Department for Execution of the Criminal Sanctions, PI “Prison Healthcare Centre”, Strategic and European Integration Directorate, ICRC, as well as more than 80 heads of prison establishments and pre-trial detention centres, the EU and the CoE Secretariat, participated in this meeting.
In addition to the presentation of structure and expected results of the training, the aim of this online event was to seek feedback from the national counterparts and to communicate further steps SPERU Project envisages to promote the multidisciplinary approach.
This activity goes in line with the statement of Ms Natalia Rubalka, Deputy Head of the State Department of Execution of Criminal Sanctions of Ukraine, who emphasized the improvement in prison healthcare delivery as a priority.
Based on the outcome of the presentation and feedback from the national partners, the training course will be finalized and submitted to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine for its swift adoption and implementation.
This activity is organized within the framework of the EU and Council of Europe Joint Project "Support to Prison Reform in Ukraine - SPERU", which is designed to promote human rights compliant management of prisons, including better alignment of prison healthcare provisions with European standards.
