Prison governors and high-level prison management increased their awareness and knowledge on addressing radicalisation in prisons through a 3-day training, which took place in Gevgelija on 18-20 February 2019. The training provided a forum for reviewing the phenomenon of radicalisation in prisons from a perspective of international standards and best practices, focusing on the Council of Europe Guidelines and Handbook on Radicalisation, but at the same time providing an opportunity to debate the problems and challenges that radicalisation poses on national level.

The participants also discussed the application in practice of the Screening and Risk and Needs Assessment tools for radicalised inmates, which had been previously developed under the auspices of the project. In addition, they exchanged opinions on the functioning of the multi-disciplinary treatment teams, aimed at screening and profiling inmates, as well as the importance of managerial support and good prison management in combating radicalisation in prisons.

The training for prison governors and members of management on radicalisation in prisons was carried out within the scope of the Action “Strengthening the protection of the rights of sentenced persons”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe within the “Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey” and implemented by the Council of Europe.
