The first evaluation visits to assess the progress of piloting the toolkits on the suicide and self-harm behavior screening and the assessment of the mental health took place in three selected prisons, Kosh, Armavir and Abovyan (the female prison in Armenia).
The aim of the visits was to assess the progress on the application of the toolkits and to receive feedback from staff who apply them. As first results of these visits, representatives of the Penitentiary service and Prison Medicine Center SNCO learned the methodology of the newly developed tools and enhanced their skills in applying them. Once the piloting finalized, these tools will enable the medical staff to better perform initial screening upon admission in a penitentiary institution of persons deprived of liberty, as well as an in-depth assessment in respect of the mental health, suicide and self-harm behavior in line with the European standards.
The first evaluation visits were organised on 27, 28 September and 1 October and the piloting should last until end of 2021. Periodical evaluation should allow fine tuning of the toolkits, with the aim of rolling them out at the national level once the piloting phase is over.
The monitoring visits were organised within the framework of the project “Enhancing health care and human rights protection in prisons in Armenia” financed through the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia 2019 -2022.
