The Training Centre of the National Administration of Penitentiaries of the Republic of Moldova enhanced its abilities to deliver a new course on working with juveniles and young adults in detention

During a pilot - session, the team of the Training Centre of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (NAP TC) enhanced their knowledge and professional skills in delivering a new course on Working with Juveniles and Young Adults in Detention, designed for the specialists of the prison system of the Republic of Moldova.

The pilot-session followed the development of a Curriculum consisting of 6 Modules, including the learning support materials. It aims at promoting more effective rehabilitation of juveniles and young adults in detention, by enhancing the communication and interpersonal skills of the prison staff, as well as their mentor and crisis management abilities for maintaining a positive culture in juvenile detention centres.

Thus, 19 specialists from 5 prisons and NAP specialised departments gained extensive knowledge and enhanced their capabilities in carrying out mentoring and educational activities; learned new modalities and techniques to resolve conflicts, promote health and generate motivation in juveniles for maintaining a healthy regime. Participants also shared their individual experiences on the impact of the criminal subculture on juveniles and the traps to avoid, while expressing their commitment to improve their working practices and share the new approaches with their peers.

 

The pilot - session was facilitated by the Council of Europe consultants and was attended by specialists from prisons, with the participation and support of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and the representatives of the National Administration of Penitentiaries. The activity was organised under the auspices of the Project “Strengthening the prison and probation reforms, provision of health care and the treatment of patients in closed institutions in the Republic of Moldova”, financed through the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova (2021-2024) and implemented by the Council of Europe.
