Back Meeting of the Ministers’ Deputies on 14 February 2024

At the beginning of the 1489th meeting of the Ministers' Deputies, on 14 February 2024, the President, followed by other delegations, paid tribute to the memory of Mr Robert Badinter, former French Minister of Justice who was responsible for the abolition of the death penalty in France in 1981. His relentless fight against capital punishment in his own country, elsewhere in Europe and the world is continued by the Committee of Ministers today.

The Deputies held a thematic debate on ensuring the reliability and quality of information and sustainable journalism in the digital era, organised at the initiative of the Liechtenstein Presidency, with the participation of Mr Christophe Deloire, Secretary General of Reporters Without Borders and President of the Forum on Information and Democracy, and Dr Marko Milosavljević from the Department of Journalism at the University of Ljubljana. The debate included presentations and observations on the crucial role of the public service media in ensuring a reliable information space and how the authorities can contribute to creating an enabling environment for journalism to thrive.

The Deputies adopted two Declarations prepared by the European Committee for Social Cohesion: the first on social cohesion at the crossroads and the second on preserving social cohesion in the transition to a green economy.

They took note of the Steering Committee for the Rights of the Child (CDENF)'s first implementation report of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child (2022-2027), and also of the Guide to children’s participation in decisions about their health (developed jointly with the Steering Committee for Human Rights in the fields of Biomedicine and Health (CDBIO).

In addition, the Deputies held an exchange of views with Mr Marc Cools, recently elected President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe [more information ….].

The other items examined by the Deputies appear in the Agenda and the decisions adopted are available in the meeting file.
