A workshop bringing together 30 participants from Moldovan Police Inspectorates and members of the LGBTI community, including parents, was recently held with the aim of fostering cooperation and advancing the analysis of cases motivated by Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC ) grounds.

The workshop addressed practical measures for tackling hate speech and hate crimes, with discussions centered on complaint procedures and investigative steps. Participants shared their experiences, while police representatives explained institutional processes and reaffirmed their commitment to fair treatment.

The meeting fostered constructive dialogue between law enforcement and the LGBTI community, helping ensure that concerns are better understood and effectively addressed. By focusing on transparency and collaboration, the workshop provided a platform to discuss practical steps for improving institutional responses to complaints.

The workshop also carried a strong emotional dimension, as survivors of hate‑motivated incidents shared the situations they had endured, with some of them being minors at the time.

Parents of trans persons shared their experiences, underscoring the challenges faced by their families and the vital role of support networks in overcoming stigma and discrimination. The discussions also emphasized victim interaction and support, highlighting the need for sensitive communication, timely assistance, and accessible services to prevent re‑traumatization.

The event was conducted in both Romanian and Russian to enable the initiative group established in Bălți, in northern Moldova, to express themselves freely and share their experiences.

An important outcome of the workshop was the exchange of direct contacts with designated Police Focal Points, ensuring that future communication between the community and law enforcement will be more accessible and responsive.

Building on the cooperation platform established in 2024 and 2025, the initiative advanced mutual understanding and collaboration, laying the groundwork for stronger partnerships and more effective protection of rights between the Moldovan Police and the LGBTI community.

This event was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova for the period 2025-2028, through the Council of Europe project "Enhancing diversity and equality in the Republic of Moldova – phase II", in collaboration with the General Police Inspectorate and the GENDERDOC-M Information Centre.
