The Wollmatinger Ried is after the Rhine delta one of the most important wetlands on Lake Constance with numerous endangered plant species; In autumn and winter it is an internationally very important area for resting waterfowl, in spring and summer for many breeding birds. The reserve forms a unit of Ermatinger basin, Hegne bay, two small islands and the reed beds on the mainland.
