Alleged destruction of the habitat of the little cormorant Microcarbo pygmeus on the Sava River in Belgrade

This complaint was submitted in 2024 by the NGO Licej and concerns the destruction of an area protected by the Bern Convention, the habitat of the little cormorant Microcarbo pygmeus on the Sava River in Belgrade, Serbia, due to the installation of a marina. The Complainants allege a violation of Article 6(b) of the Bern Convention.

This site is situated within the Internationally Important Bird Area "Ušće Sava and Danube". Historically, almost 10% of the total European population of the Microcarbo pygmeus species winters in the willows on the banks of the Sava River.

This species is included under Appendix II of the Bern Convention and under Annex I of the European Union Birds Directive. As such, its habitats represent potential Natura 2000 areas. The little cormorant is also considered a vulnerable species according to IUCN’s Red List.
