Back Alleged threats to marine turtles due to a new coal-fired power plant at Sugözü Beach

The complaint was submitted in 2021 by ÇETKO - ÇevreveTüketiciyiKorumaDerneği and other associations on the construction of a coal-fired plant and the supporting infrastructure including port structures, a pier and a road connection at Sugözü Beach.

This area, next to the Yumurtalık Lagoon in Adana, is a major nesting site for the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean. The complaint states that the construction negatively affects the nesting habitat through habitat loss and fragmentation of the land and in the sea as the coastal area will be covered with concrete, which prevents sea turtles from nesting. Additionally, according to an EIA, the project may result in an increase in water and soil temperature. The complainants also allege that the project will result in soil, light, noise, and air pollution. The complaint was dismissed in 2023 following 2 years without concrete updates from the complainant.
