The prison monitoring toolkit presented to more than 350 CMBs members

A total of 375 representatives from different civil monitoring boards (CMB) have so far been familiarised with the new prison monitoring methodology, checklists and reporting template, and have enhanced their understanding of the relevant international standards. Once put in practice, this toolkit will establish a uniform prison monitoring approach throughout Turkey, assisting the CMBs in better assessing the compliance of prison conditions and treatment vis-a-vis the applicable international standards and national legislation.

As a result of fruitful discussions, the CMBs agreed that the toolkit will bring added value to the prison monitoring process, which will provide prison authorities with tailor-made recommendations leading towards improved treatment and a more successful rehabilitation of prisoners in Turkey.

The informative meetings will continue to be organised in September 2021, followed by the on-site piloting phase that will test its applicability within the prison context.

The 6 online informative sessions were held within the Project entitled “Enhancing the Effectiveness of the Civil Monitoring Boards in Turkey in line with the European Standards” funded by Sweden, Switzerland, the Republic of Turkey, the Human Rights Trust Fund of the Council of Europe and Canada.
