A delegation of thirteen representatives from the Turkish Ministry of Justice, including Public Prosecutors and Judges, led by the Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr. Hurşit Yıldırım, participated in a study visit on international judicial cooperation in Madrid, Spain, from 24 to 26 September 2024.
The visit was organised as part of the EU/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Improving International Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters in Turkey”. During the study visit, participants engaged in discussions on Spain's system for international judicial cooperation in criminal matters and explored ways to strengthen cooperation among peers by exchanging experiences.
The study visit programme began with a visit to the Madrid Public Prosecutor’s Office, followed by meetings at the Ministry of Justice. Turkish Ministry of Justice representatives, prosecutors, and judges discussed the role of Spain's Central Authority in handling Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) and extradition cases, along with the fundamental legal frameworks governing judicial cooperation in Spain. The discussions also addressed topics such as human resources management, judicial training, and the Spanish file management system. The programme continued with visits to the National Court, General Council of Judiciary and the Spain Supreme Court, where participants were informed on the Spanish legal system. Throughout these visits, Turkish participants had opportunities to exchange ideas and thoughts, with their Spanish counterparts, on good practices and challenges in relation to MLA and extradition. The visit directly contributed to the judicial cooperation between Spain and Türkiye.
The project ‘Improving International Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters in Turkey’ is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe.
