Peter Drenth (Netherlands, EPP/CCE), Congress Standing Rapporteur on Human Rights, issued the following statement regarding the dramatic situation currently unfolding in Ceuta:

"We are deeply saddened by the many people who have lost their lives in these tragic events, and we extend our sincere condolences to their families. Our thoughts also go to the local authorities and emergency services of Ceuta, who are working under extraordinary pressure to respond to this humanitarian crisis. The Congress stands in full solidarity with the city of Ceuta and all authorities, as they work to safeguard the dignity and safety of all those affected."

The Congress will continue to pursue its work in the follow-up to the Chisinau Declaration, with a view to strengthening cooperation across all levels of governance - and in particular the essential link with local and regional authorities, who are so often the first to respond.
