Council of Europe’s Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO) publishes report on Romania
The Council of Europe’s anti-corruption monitoring mechanism, the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) has published today its Second Round Evaluation Report on Romania. The report has been made public with the agreement of the Romanian authorities.
The Report indicates that Romania has made considerable progress in the field of legislative and institutional reform. It adopted a new anti-corruption strategy and an action plan to implement it and specialised bodies to fight corruption are in place. Numerous projects are in preparation, in particular the reform of the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure. The report also underlines that Romania is dedicated to achieving tangible results in transforming its administration and ensuring its efficient and transparent functioning, as well as in the prevention and suppression of corruption within legal persons and the recovery of proceeds of corruption.
Measures taken by Romania to implement the recommendations will be assessed by GRECO in the context of a specific compliance procedure, towards the beginning of 2007.
