    Promotion of global/development education in Bulgaria

    On 25-27 September 2009 a national seminar to promote global/development education in Bulgaria will take place in Sozopol at the Black Sea.

    The purpose of the meeting is to bring together the Bulgarian key stakeholders in the field and assess the state of art of global/development education in the country and raise public awareness on the basis of the EU strategy “European Consensus on Development Education” as well as the Council of Europe’s current process towards adopting a Recommendations on global education. The meeting also aims at preparing on the basis of this assessment a national global/development educations strategy and respective plan of action.

    The meeting will bring together approximately 35 participants from Bulgarian ministries, governmental agencies, representatives from non-governmental organisations dealing with global/development education at national, regional and local level, local authorities as well as foreign experts from United Kingdom, Greece, Romania and the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe.

    This seminar is organised by the Open Education Centre Foundation in partnership with Bourgas Free University and the Municipality of Bourgas, the Association of Bulgarian Municipalities as well as the Bulgaria National Platform for Development Education. The activity is taking place in cooperation and with the support of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

    The programme of the seminar will tackle main challenges and perspectives for global development education in Bulgaria, the role of civil society as well as local authorities in this field, European perspectives on global/development education, and the role of European institutions in supporting global development education in the new member states of the EU.

On 27 November 2008 the European Commission and the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe (NSC) signed a Joint Management Agreement to strengthen global development education in the new Member States of the European Union and to promote youth cooperation between Africa and Europe. The project is implemented by the NSC during 2009-2011 through close collaboration of non-state actors and civil society platforms.
