Seminar on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society

A Seminar on the Council of Europe Framework Convention on the value of Cultural Heritage for Society (the Faro Convention) will be held in Yasnaya Polyana on 13-14 September 2010.

The Seminar, hosted by the Ministry of Culture of Russia and the Yasnaya Polyana Museum, will bring together academics and high-level experts to discuss the contribution of cultural heritage to the progress of society as highlighted in the Convention. It will also present related case-studies in member states and explain how the Council’s Herein tool will enable follow-up of this and other Council of Europe conventions in the field of cultural heritage.

The Faro Convention poses the question why and for whom the heritage is transmitted. It is based on the idea that knowledge and use of heritage form part of the citizen’s right to participate in cultural life as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
