Adoption of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating
violence against women and domestic violence
On 7 April 2011 the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers adopted the
Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic
violence.
This new landmark treaty of the Council of Europe opens the path for
creating a legal framework at pan-European level to protect women against
all forms of violence, and prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against
women and domestic violence. The Convention also establishes a specific
monitoring mechanism in order to ensure effective implementation of its
provisions by the Parties.
The Convention will be opened for signature on the occasion of the 121st
Session of the Committee of Ministers (Istanbul, 10-11 May 2011).

The 7th Council of Europe Conference of Minister
responsible for Equality between women and men was held on 24-25 May 2010 in
Baku, Azerbaijan. The main theme of the Conference was:
"Gender equality: bridging the gap between de jure and de facto equality"
There were two sub-themes
dedicated to:
Positive
action and gender mainstreaming to achieve de facto gender equality;
Combating
gender stereotypes: the role of education and the media
