Monitoring places where children are deprived of their liberty as a result of immigration procedures

The Children’s Rights Division, as part of the joint-project with the Parliamentary Assembly to end immigration detention of children, organised a pilot training seminar on monitoring places where children are deprived of their liberty as a result of immigration procedures.

Taking place in Strasbourg on 11-12 April, parliamentarians and ombudspersons were provided with information regarding the reality of immigration detention of children and the applicable human rights and legal standards, with key aims of giving participants a child-safe and effective methodology on how to visit a detention centre, or other places where a child may have been deprived of their liberty.

The training comprised presentations from relevant Council of Europe entities, including the Special Representative for Migration and Refugees, and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, as well as interventions from international bodies such as UNHCR, and detention and children specialists.

Developed in partnership with Defence for Children International, the pilot training will provide the foundation for further training sessions on this subject as part of the continuing Parliamentary Assembly campaign to end immigration detention of children.
