In an opinion editorial published today on the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera, the Commissioner, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, called on the Italian Senate to amend the current draft law on defamation.

“To better reflect both national and international standards, a new law should fully decriminalise defamation, allow for corrections and apologies as remedies and contain stronger deterrent provisions to avoid the abuse of defamation law by the plaintiffs.”
