The project “Strengthening Health Care and Human Rights Protection in Prisons in Armenia” was officially launched in partnership with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia. The project is implemented within the scope of 2015-2017 EU-CoE Eastern Partnership Programmatic Co-operation Framework. The duration of the project is 24 months and it will be completed by 28 February 2017.

The project aims at strengthening human rights in prisons in Armenia through better provision of healthcare for prisoners. The project’s objectives include improvement of the legal and institutional framework of healthcare in prisons, capacity building of the staff and improvement of the material conditions of prisons’ healthcare units, with a special focus on prisons that were considered as problematic in the latest reports by the Council of Europe’s Committee to Prevent Torture.

Key speakers included Mr Hovhannes Manukyan, Minister of Justice of Republic of Armenia, Ms Natalia Voutova, Head of Council of Europe Office in Yerevan and Mr Hoa-Binh Adjemian, Head of Cooperation Section of Delegation of European Union to Armenia.
