Geri "Malta in the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe" seminar

The seminar Malta in the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe took place on 29-30 October 2025 in Birgu, Malta.

The seminar was co-organised by the Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government of Malta and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (EPA), forming part of the programme of the Presidency of Malta of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Intended to strengthen the visibility of the Cultural Routes programme in Malta, the seminar facilitated contacts between Maltese stakeholders and certified Cultural Routes.

After a cultural programme featuring a visit to the National Viticulture and Oenology Centre and a guided tour of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park, participants gathered at Fort St. Angelo in Birgu on 30 October.

The seminar provided an overview of the main characteristics of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe for Maltese stakeholders and offered practical next steps for further collaboration. Via a networking session, closer links were established between certified Routes and national stakeholders.

The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Karsten Xuereb (Arts Council Malta), who reflected on Malta, the Mediterranean and Europe, with particular reference to the Phoenicians’ Routes and the Cultural Routes programme at large.

16 Cultural Routes were represented at the seminar:

Malta acceded to the EPA in 2023 and is crossed by five Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

A similar seminar will be hosted in the Republic of Moldova in 2026, as part of the Moldovan Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
