Human Rights Day: There is still much work to be done, say Council of Europe leaders

Europe has the strongest system of human rights protection in the world and many positive changes have taken place across the continent since the launch of the European Convention on Human Rights 70 years ago.

However, the fight for our rights is on-going and there is still much work to be done, according to a joint statement [link] from the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, and the President of the organisation’s Parliamentary Assembly, Liliane Maury Pasquier, to mark Human Rights Day on 10 December.

A decade of reforms have greatly reduced the backlog of cases at the European Court of Human Rights, and there have also been improvements to the implementation of the court’s judgments.

Nevertheless, there are still some 60,000 applications pending at the court and more than 5,000 of its judgments have yet to be fully implemented. These numbers remain too high and require coordinated efforts between the Council of Europe, the court and the 47 member states.

Work is also needed to make sure that the human rights convention protects people in every corner of the continent and in all circumstances.

"We cannot meet today’s challenges with yesterday’s playbook. And we must never forget that democracy is our first line of defence. What Europe needs is a reset: a New Democratic Pact for Europe." Alain Berset Secretary General of the Council of Europe
